Not Bread Alone, Crows Nest

This little cafe is my favourite in the foodie heaven of Crows Nest, it is tucked away from the main strip of cafes so that only locals know it and it always delivers with fantastically friendly service. The cafe itself is breezy and laidback, with wooden tables that are mostly outdoors but it has a nice and intimate vibe, with heaters blazing in winter and classic 90s love songs playing in the background.

Crab Ravioli with Creamy Zucchini and Garlic Sauce – $20.90

I always end up ordering my favourite dish here – the crab ravioli, which comes with a choice of 3 different sauces – provincial, pesto or creamy zucchini and garlic. The pesto is delicious but I hadn’t tried the creamy zucchini and garlic sauce yet so I opted for that on my current visit. It seemed slightly too heavy on the cream for my liking and masked the fresh taste of the crab filling from the ravioli, but it was still tasty for the first few bites before the creaminess set in.

Gnocchi with Cream Sauce, Seeded Mustard, Chicken and Spinach – $19.90

My dinner buddy also tried the pasta special of the day, which was gnocchi with seeded mustard sauce and spinach. Although it was also a cream-based sauce, the mustard seeds added a great tang to the sauce which kept it from being too heavy and I preferred this sauce to the ravioli sauce. The portion sizings are reasonable for both the ravioli and gnocchi, particularly as both pastas contain delicious fillings of either crab or potato which ended up giving us very full stomachs…

Warmed Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Sauce and Ice Cream – $11.50

But somehow, we still found room for dessert to share – the warmed chocolate brownie drizzled in hot chocolate sauce with strawberries on top and thoughtfully accompanied by not just one, but two bowls of vanilla icecream for my buddy and I to demolish. I love the way that the icecream counteracts the heat from the brownie and just melts in your mouth, and the brownie itself has satisfying chunks of chocolate running through it so that it is not just all soft and gooey.

All in all, consistently good food which has also impressed everyone who I’ve taken there with me so far and one of my little secret finds that I’m happy to share with other lovers of tasty food.
