Sakura-Tei, Town Hall

This is a cute, little Japanese restaurant tucked away on the ground floor of the building opposite the QVB on York Street. My best friend has been telling me about this place and their delicious meals for some time, but I haven’t had a chance to find out for myself until today, when we decided to go there for lunch.

There is a bustling takeaway sushi stall at the front of the restaurant, selling generously sized rolls to businesspeople on the go but you can opt to sit inside and eat-in. The menu boasts the usual selection of udon, ramen, donburi and curries for lunch and I end up choosing the beef ramen with miso soup base, while my best friend goes for the prawn katsu curry with rice.

Beef Ramen Noodle Soup (Miso Soup Base) – $10.8

The restaurant itself is packed out at lunch hour and it is a bit difficult to get the attention of the several Japanese waitresses rushing around the place, but the food comes out quite quickly after we place our order and the waitresses are brisk but polite. The servings are huge – my ramen is filled almost to the brim with soup, seaweed and so many pieces of beef that I can’t even see the ramen noodles underneath all the toppings. The beef is lightly marinated, but in rather large pieces that require me to cut it up into more bite-sized portions via chopsticks. The soup itself is tasty, if a little on the salty side and the noodles have just the right amount of springiness to them.

Overall, it was a very satisfying bowl of ramen on a cold winter’s day and my friend enjoyed her prawn katsu curry too, especially the crumbed prawns which were crispy and flavoursome and the curry was also good, though not amazing. Definitely a good spot to try out for city workers if you have a lunch hour to spare and want some authentic and decently priced Japanese food to fuel your work day.
