La Renaissance Patisserie Cafe, The Rocks

On a breezy spring day, we strolled over to the picturesque Rocks area looking for some brunch – our target was La Renaissance, famous for their macarons but since I had already tried their Jasmine Tea macaron at the Aroma festival a few months back, we decided to sample some of their savoury delights.

The boy and I settled on the Poulet Chasseur pie and Quiche Lorraine, and he ordered a cappuccino too. We headed outside to bask in the spring sunshine of their Courtyard Cafe which is out the back, though there is also an option to sit outside the Argyle Lane entrance.

Soon enough, our pie and quiche came out and though they looked like nothing out of the ordinary, both tasted authentically French – especially the Poulet Chasseur which was a traditional French hunters recipe of diced chicken, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic and white wine. Pretty much everything I love in a dish all packaged up in one little pie and definitely not a flavour that’s common in pie stores around the city.  It was deliciously rustic and while I thought that the tomato base could have been slightly more flavoursome, it was more than made up for by the rest of the hearty ingredients thrown into the mix.

Poulet Chasseur, $8.00

On the other hand, the quiche lorraine is a pretty normal fixture on cafe menus but La Renaissance does a particularly light version with fluffy egg combined with crispy smoked bacon inside the quiche, so that you can tell that they’re using quality ingredients.

Quiche Lorraine, $6.00

The cappuccino was the usual but with more of a hint of rose fragrance and tasted like spring according to the boy, which was rather appropriate considering the weather.

Cappuccino, $3.50

The historic cobblestone courtyard was quaint and really epitomises what The Rocks is all about, so if you’re around the area and need a bite to eat, stopover here to try some savoury and sweet goodies from this patisserie, such as their almond croissant and palmier which we took away (but gobbled down before I could take a photo of them for you all…)

Various sweet goodies

The cafe is only a short walk from Circular Quay station or straight down from the George Street exit of Wynyard, if you’re feeling like a bit more exercise.
