The Baron, Castle Hill

A slice of inner city sophistication has found its way to Castle Hill in the form of The Baron, which actually looks more like a Surry Hills cafe. It’s still pretty new and gives coffee connoisseurs who live in the Hills the option to enjoy Single Origin coffee without trekking out all the way to the city.  The Baron even turns into a small bar at night, which is great news for Hills-people who were getting a bit bored of the bars on offer in the area.

We’re trying out their breakfast menu this morning and unfortunately there’s not a lot of choice since their small kitchen is a bit limited. They have thoughtfully listed the origins of where they have sourced their ingredients from and we find out that the free range eggs are from Kellyville, so it’s nice to see we get to experience local produce.

Our coffees come first and all of us are quite impressed by the intense flavour of the Single Origin beans. Soon our Scramby Eggs with toasted sourdough joins the table. The scrambled free range eggs are smooth and creamy but are a bit bland even with some cracked pepper on top.

Then we get our Bacon N Egg Roll and Brekkie Wrap, neatly served on wooden boards. For a moment, I stare at my bacon roll because it looks more like a burger and I wonder how I’m going to eat it without creating a mess. Luckily, the roll is easily cut in half and compressed into a manageable size for me to eat gracefully. It’s quite a tasty combo of double smoked bacon, avocado, free range eggs and homemade tomato relish.

The innards of the Brekkie Wrap are quite similar to the Bacon Roll except it has cheese and homemade BBQ sauce instead and looks more classy, with its lightly grilled tortilla sliced into halves for you already. It’s basically a lighter version of the roll and is full of savoury goodness, just the way I like my breakfast.

The quirkiness of The Baron makes it quite unique among Hills cafes and for a place that has been named after the first freeman to live in Castle Hill and who grew coffee beans; we think that it is living up to its name quite well.
