Pony Lounge and Dining, Neutral Bay

While Neutral Bay has always been known for being a bit of a foodie destination for some, I had no idea that it had been undergoing a revamp on one of its main streets and had welcomed some more contemporary restaurants to the neighbourhood. I was surprised to see Pony there on the main strip, as we were strolling through after dinner. We had already been stuffed full of savoury goodies by that stage but we always have a separate stomach for dessert, so in we went.

I love the modern, upbeat vibe of Pony – this one is a sister store to the original restaurant at The Rocks which I’ve heard great things about. It’s not busy at all tonight and we just take a seat on the sleek lounges near the front to check out the dessert menu. We settle on the hazelnut parfait and the vanilla crème brulee, which sound conventional and ordinary at first, but the Pony versions really blew us away.

First up, the hazelnut parfait was absolutely amazing with layers of flavour, the nuttiness mixing well with the light, airy lime meringue (like a pavlova) and fresh summer berries adding sweetness and zest. This was hands down, one of the best desserts I’ve ever had.

The vanilla crème brulee was also packed with seasonal fruit; it came with mangoes and passionfruit as well as a brown sugar crispbread. It had quite a thick glaze on top and came in an adorable little pot. The fruit was separate from it and added a tart freshness to the brulee, especially the passionfruit which was very tangy in contrast to the sweet custard of the crème brulee. The accompanying crispbread is a bit random and doesn’t add much to the dessert overall but tastes fine on its own.

I’m keen to go back to Pony for some proper dinner instead of just dessert and I hope it lives up to the high standards that the dessert has set in my mind.
