Hurricane’s Grill, Darling Harbour

The constant queues outside all of Hurricane’s outlets in Sydney are a testament to the addictive quality of their signature dish – gloriously marinated ribs. Tonight is no different; our group of 5 gets in early with a 5.30pm booking just before the hungry crowd starts forming outside.

I’m usually not much of a fan of ribs because I find them quite messy to eat, but Hurricane’s is undoubtedly one of the best in Sydney even though it’s fairly overpriced. The Darling Harbour restaurant is darkly lit and is bustling even at this early hour. Our table has a sweeping panoramic view of the waterfront visible through the restaurant’s clear glass windows, making the most of Hurricane’s prime location in the Harbourside shopping centre.

Pimm’s Cocktail jug $26

It’s our farewell dinner for my best friend and we mark the occasion by ordering a jug of Pimm’s cocktail with diced fresh fruit and cucumber. It’s wonderfully refreshing and gets us in the mood to start on our entrée of mussels in a creamy garlic sauce. There are only 6 large mussels in the bowl but luckily there’s plenty of delicious sauce leftover to be mopped up with their soft, yet crunchy slices of bread.

Naturally, for our mains we order a full rack of pork ribs to share and the table gets quiet as we all get to work carving up the rib racks with our knives. The flesh is as tender as I remember from previous experiences; the meat falls right off the bone and has been superbly marinated in their mouthwatering barbecue sauce to make each bite incredibly moreish. It can get pretty tiring trying to remain dainty and avoid eating with your hands, but Hurricane’s gives you bibs for a reason and it’s a lot easier to throw your dignity away and just attack the ribs caveman style.

In terms of value for money, I’ve had better ribs in Amsterdam with an amazing all you can eat deal, but the taste of Hurricane’s ribs is sure hard to beat back home in Sydney. The surprising thing is that their seafood entrees are quite well done too and provide a good balance to all the meat you end up devouring in the main course. If you do plan on going to Hurricane’s I’d strongly recommend for you to book, otherwise it’s practically guaranteed that you’ll end up joining the ravenous mob outside waiting ridiculously long for a table.
