Charitable eating for Givva Fork, Major Raiser

Do you givva fork?

It’s a question which Sydney diners will be pondering about this March as the GIVVA FORK campaign kicks off across certain restaurants around town as they give diners the chance to be philanthropists with their forks by giving a little bit extra at the end of their meals to make a huge difference for children in Laos. This catchily named campaign is the brainchild of young Sydneysider Dominic Greenwood who runs a not-for-profit organisation called Major Raiser. Their aim is to fund school feeding programs in vulnerable regions around the world to help solve the problem of an estimated 66 million children who attend school hungry worldwide every day. Every dollar raised for Major Raiser’s GIVVA FORK campaign in March 2013 will provide 4 school meals to a child in need in Laos through the World Food Programme and they have partnered with popular restaurants around Sydney for this worthy cause so that their diners can have a chance to eat charitably.

So how can you get involved? It’s easy as pie – when you’re dining at one of the campaign’s restaurant partners during the month of March, you can choose to either:

1. Pay an optional “forkage” fee instead of corkage – great option if you’d much rather make a small donation to feed Laotian schoolchildren when paying the bill at the end of your meal rather than pay a fee for BYO alcohol…

2. Purchase a “GIVVA FORK” for $6, an eyecatching bright orange metal fork which you can take home with the knowledge that your purchase has provided a child in Laos with school meals for a whole month!

The restaurant partners for the GIVVA FORK campaign are spread out all across Sydney and include:

To launch the GIVVA FORK campaign, we dined with other foodbloggers and Major Raiser’s collaborators at restaurant partner Mad Pizza in Surry Hills and loved the delicious gourmet thin crust pizzas they served up. Even though the pizzas have wafer thin bases, they are surprisingly sturdy and don’t crumble under the weight of the generous amounts of flavoursome toppings when they are lifted from the pizza pans, which is pretty rare for a thin crust pizza so props to them! Our favourites were the Amalfi (featuring tiger prawns, garlic and chilli) and the Tuscano (shredded lamb shanks, spinach, red onion, peas, mint, feta, garlic oil and lemon) which were packed full of gourmet flavours. We think Mad Pizza has got the right vibe going on to make it a fantastic spot for a casual dinner with a group of friends and will be coming back to try out more of their scrumptious pizzas!

Amalfi Pizza, $19.90

Tuscano Pizza, $19.90

At the end of our meal we chose to help out by buying the funky bright orange GIVVA FORKS which are a great keepsake and remind us that it only takes a little effort to make a big difference to the lives of others on the other side of the world. So now, we’ve done our bit to help out this worthy cause by eating charitably and it’s up to the rest of Sydney to do their bit too…if you do choose to donate towards the GIVVA FORK campaign rest assured that you’ll be in good company with the likes of famous food personalities like Billy Law of Masterchef fame being a strong supporter of the campaign!
