Cafe Morso, Pyrmont

Although Pyrmont is pretty close to the CBD, whenever someone suggests a restaurant in Pyrmont, I always think about the long walk across the bridge from Town Hall over Darling Harbour and most of the time I figure it’s not worth the effort to head over. But a few of my friends have been raving about Cafe Morso in Pyrmont and when I finally found the time one sunny morning, we set off for a trek to our brunch destination.

It is just a short stroll down the road from The Star casino complex, and has a lovely waterfront view thanks to its location on one of the wooden piers in the harbour. The cafe serves up Modern Australian fare and has a relaxed, chilled out vibe coming from its simple decor and wait staff  There’s a few seating options, either inside the restaurant itself or out on the pier and we opt to sit outside to enjoy the fresh sea breeze.

Originally we had planned to get the late breakfast options but by the time we had finally reached Cafe Morso after our walk, it was closer to lunchtime and so we tried their lunch offerings instead. It was the perfect weather for seafood, so we ordered a Queensland Spanner Crab linguine which was seasoned with chilli, garlic, basil and mixed with some creme fraiche. It wasn’t particularly flavoursome since there wasn’t much sauce, but the shredded crabmeat and trio of light herbs and spices used were just enough to keep the pasta from being too bland.

As expected, the bite sized morsels of salt and pepper squid were more tasty because of the thin dusting of batter, complemented by the classic combination of chilli and shallots to pack more of a punch. But I wasn’t a fan of the pickled cucumber, mint and coriander which were also served with the dish as a salad of sorts – I would have preferred a creamy aioli to go with the salt and pepper squid as it got a bit dry after a few bites.

Although both the dishes we tried were slightly off the mark as they could have done with a bit more sauce, the overall quality of their dishes is quite decent and Cafe Morso has all the elements which make it a fantastic casual brunch spot if you are happy to make the trek over from the CBD. My friend has had better experiences with their late breakfast dishes, so next time I’m in the area I’ll try to drop in earlier to try those options instead.
