Hungry Mondays

Ever find yourself extremely hungry, but too lazy to cook and not wanting to eat unhealthy restaurant takeaway food? That’s where Hungry Mondays comes in! It’s such a brilliant concept I can’t believe no one has thought of it before.

Hungry Mondays slow cooks gourmet homely meals over each weekend (up to 17 hours per meal), packages them and then sells them to the public every Monday – Wednesday at a variety of locations across Sydney at the price of $9/meal. There’s also delivery options for those wanting to bulk buy or who aren’t able to get to the locations within the CBD fringe. The menu is ever changing, but I’ve noticed that curry, pasta, braised meats and rice often recur with variations in flavours. It’s super easy to prepare by simply microwaving it for a couple of minutes, and it makes for quite a filling meal! I’ve purchased a few of their meals over a period of time and here are some of their previous menu items which I’ve tried:

16 HOUR MILK BRAISED PORK WITH THYME, LEMON AND PASTA

This is certainly an interesting combination with milk, thyme and lemon all being conflicting flavours in my mind. The pork is soft and tender and contains subtle lemon and milk flavours, highly reminiscent of the milk and lemon chicken I had in Rome. The pasta is chewy and soft and has absorbed the flavours well. Although this pasta is one of the more unconventional flavours available, it’s quite interesting and tasty. I’m quite surprised by the portion though; it is very rare that I cannot finish a meal and this time I was stuffed full with a few spoonfuls to go!

14 HOUR SLOW BRAISED BEEF MASSAMAN CURRY SIDED BY JASMINE RICE AND PEANUTS (DAIRY AND GLUTEN FREE)

This dish is particularly sauce heavy compared to the portion of rice that is provided. The sauce tastes like a mild curry, but isn’t exactly what a massaman curry is meant to taste like, lacking the richness and creaminess of Thai restaurants. Nevertheless, the beef is soft and tender, and the peanuts add some good texture. There’s also some potato pieces in it and similarly to the pasta I had last time, I found it very filling and couldn’t finish it off! Although it’s a cheaper alternative, the flavours were a bit strange so I think I’d opt for massaman curry from a Thai restaurant next time.

MEXICAN CHICKEN WITH 17 HOUR KABIK SAUCE (MED) WITH RICE AND BEANS (GLUTEN DAIRY AND NUT FREE)

Although the description says that the Kabik sauce is medium, it is definitely hot hot hot and packs a punch in your mouth!  The chicken pieces are soft and tender and goes well with the spiciness, as do the beans and rice which soak up all the flavour. It’s a great combination and is my favourite of all three Hungry Monday meals I’ve tried. It’s also the first one I’ve finished completely!

Hungry Mondays is a great concept, and a fantastic back up plan if you’re lazy and wanting an affordable meal as you can freeze the meals as well. It sells out very quickly as some weeks I had to put my name on a waiting list, so best to call to put in an order and time to pick up your meal to avoid disappointment. Visit their website or Facebook to find out their weekly menu, order process and locations for purchase.
