Element 6, West Ryde

When you think of trendy cafes, suburbs such as Balmain, Newtown and Alexandria normally come to mind…but who would have ever expected for a hip cafe to open shop in the mostly residential suburb of West Ryde? Element 6 is a small hole-in-the-wall cafe featuring quirky wall paintings and artworks. Although nestled away on the quieter side of West Ryde station (not the Woolworths side), it is continuously busy with a short queue already formed when we arrive at 11am on a Saturday morning.

I’m feeling like something more substantial today but unfortunately the lunch menu doesn’t start until 12pm, so I make myself comfortable with some drinks while my friends pick away at their breakfast options.

Sultans Sunrise – $5.5

The drinks come out first in cute little jars. My order is the Sultans Sunrise which features freshly squeezed orange juice with sweet tones of pomegranate. It also contains pulp which I like and also highlights the freshness of the juice.

Honeybee Smoothie – $6.5

My friend gets the smoothie which features banana, cinnamon, yoghurt and honey. It is creamy and delicious, and I only wish the jars weren’t so small because there definitely wasn’t enough to satisfy our taste buds.

Rosemary Garlic Mushrooms with Poached Eggs, Roast Tomato, Haloumi and Baby Spinach – $15

One of the breakfast items we’ve ordered is a blackboard special, and although isn’t presented in the neatest fashion, the taste makes up for it. The mushrooms are sautéed well and make a great combination with the spinach and eggs. There are a lot of juices though from all elements of the dish and it makes the bread a bit soggy which annoys my friend – she prefers it when the toast is served on the side.

Chorizo Roll with Egg, Cheese, Tomato and e6 Aioli – $12

The other breakfast option our party has opted for is the chorizo roll. Rather than a “roll”, it is served on an open bun with small chopped up pieces of chorizo. The cheese and aioli which has melted on top of the chorizo adds layers of flavours, and when sandwiched with the rocket and egg in the bun is super tasty. I’m really jealous that my friend ordered this instead of me, and it’s an item I will definitely be getting next time.

Slow Roasted Pulled Pork with Cabbage Slaw – $14

By this time it is finally lunch time and I am able to order my slow roasted pulled pork! When served, there is a lot of creamy coleslaw, a bit too much for my liking which I end up eating separately. The pulled pork hidden behind has a smokey BBQ flavour and is soft and tender. The bun is also toasty with an inner coating of tomato onion jam, delicious!

Overall, Element 6 is a winner and great addition to West Ryde which is normally shadowed by the neighbouring Top Ryde shopping centre and Eastwood eateries. For locals, trekking to far away suburbs is no longer required for cafe food, as is trying to find parking as there is plenty among the quiet West Ryde area.
