The Morrison, Wynyard

Under the guidance of ex-Astral chef Sean Connolly, The Morrison Bar & Oyster Room has breathed new life into the old Brooklyn Hotel on the corner of Grosvenor and George Streets. There’s more than just oysters on offer here – it’s also a stylish spot to grab a few drinks, with its colourful geometrically tiled bar tables and trendy naked light bulbs hanging from the ceiling.

Every day from 5-7pm, The Morrison serves up $10 cocktails and we take advantage of this by ordering a Highline and a Mulled Wine. The latter comes served in a fancy little floral teacup which only adds to the comforting nature of the classic mixture of warm red wine and cinnamon, although The Morrison’s version is spiked with Bacardi 8 year, apple schnapps as well as strawberries, apples and oranges. It is absolutely delicious and the Highline is also a hit with the boy with its refreshing blend of Aperol, orange, vanilla syrup and grapefruit bitters.

It’s only 5.30 and still a bit early for a proper dinner at this stage, so we decide to order a couple of dishes to share between 3 of us. First up is the Crab Toast which is a simple mound of snow crab pieces mixed with creme fraiche, lemon zest and chives served atop a slice of dark rye. Admittedly, it’s pricey for what it is, but that doesn’t stop it from tasting delicious in an extravagant kind of way.

The boys are feeling meaty tonight and have gone for the Free Range Lamb Shoulder for the main part of the “pre-dinner”. It’s been listed under the Communal section of the menu and when it comes out in all its glistening glory, we can see why it’s been designed to share because it is a pretty hefty serving. The star anise on top is not just decorative; it has been flavoured with the distinctive spice and also a raspberry vinegar which has kept the meat moist and tender, falling off the bone as we slice into it. It’s a rather satisfying accompaniment to the Mulled Wine and together, they create a warm, soothing fullness that is just perfect for some cooler nights.

Aside from its reasonably priced tasty cocktails during their happy hour, The Morrison is definitely at the upper end of the mid range dining spectrum for everything else. But with well executed dishes to accompany its fantastic drinks, I know I’ll be back to try more – especially since I haven’t even tried their oysters yet!
