Miss Peaches, Newtown

Miss Peaches’s soul food kitchen dishes up casual dining in the form of American comfort food, with a funky bar decked out in colourful furniture and callouts to Southern culture emblazoned on their exposed brick walls.

We started off our meal with a couple of their fun American themed cocktails – a Mississippi Sour for my friend and a Watermelon Ruby Fizz for me. My friend’s drink was actually sweeter than mine, despite my cocktail consisting of Tanqueray gin with watermelon soda, as opposed to her concoction with its Laird’s applejack, lemon juice, bitters and an interesting spicy honey ginger syrup.

The bar snacks menu had looked pretty appealing to us, so to go with our drinks we had ordered the Bug Pies (Moreton Bay bugs that is!). The flaky puff pastry crescents looked like empanadas and encased a creamy filling of Moreton Bay bug tails and a Southern bechamel, although I couldn’t really taste the bugs themselves and the supposed spiciness of the bechamel sauce.

Our other selection from the bar snacks menu was the fun Spice Coated Shrimp and Popcorn with chilli salt, which was served in a cute cardboard takeaway noodle box. We were pleasantly surprised to see plenty of actual popcorn in the box, with tasty little nubbins of fried popcorn shrimp hiding underneath all the crunchy popcorn itself. There’s quite a bit of digging through the box involved for you to find the popcorn shrimp, but they’re worth the effort.

For mains, we couldn’t go past the intriguing Colonel burger – especially because it was Sunday, a.k.a burger night at Miss Peaches! The Colonel burger’s name pretty much speaks for itself; it’s basically a KFC two piece feed meal all rolled into 1 – the mash and gravy is slathered onto the crispy fried chicken pieces, topped off with coleslaw and sandwiched between two soft buns. Somehow this combo ends up working – a seriously guilty pleasure.

The Colonel Burger, $12

Last but not least, we finished off with a hearty serving of Gumbo with two plump scallops nestled in the middle of the stew. Gumbo is one of those signature Southern American dishes that we don’t see very often here in Sydney and Miss Peaches rendition is a very flavoursome blend of tomatoes, celery, okra, onion and chilli. The strong flavours may not necessarily be to everyone’s taste and after a few spoonfuls, I found it a bit too overwhelming for my tastebuds.

Scallop Gumbo, $15

Miss Peaches is a laidback joint, with some hits and misses on their menu, but overall their food is fun and suits the playful aesthetic of their decor.
