Jones the Grocer, Westfield Sydney

We’ve been Jones the Grocer a couple times now and each time their food has never failed to deliver (that heavenly sticky date pudding anyone?). In March they revamped and extended their menu – now featuring burgers and grilled mains along with more pasta, salad and dessert options. The menu even has a pizza teaser “Where’s the pizza? Coming soon!”, perfect for the upcoming winter weather.

Arancini Salad – $17

On this visit we decided to try only new dishes, starting off with the Arancini Salad. The arancini balls were made of beetroot, thyme and fontina cheese, providing the inside with a pinkish tinge. The beetroot gave it an earthy taste, complimented by the bitter rocket and sweet aioli.

Jones Burger – $22

Next up was the Jones Burger featuring a delicious combination of wagyu beef, bacon and cheese complemented with truffle mayo. It was juicy and everything a burger should be, with mustard and onions adding some extra layers of flavour. I wasn’t a big fan of the chips though. These were thick cut, not that crispy and served with a tomato sauce which had a slight fennel taste that dulled the usual sweetness of the tomatoes.

Lasagne – $23

The lasagne on the menu caught our eye as it wasn’t your usual beef lasagne, but rather a gourmet version featuring 12 hour braised beef cheeks and gruyere bechamel. The beef cheefs gave it a really soft consistency and the portion we were served was massive – great value for money! It lacked a richness in the tomato-based sauce which lasagne usually has but made up for it with the hearty beef.

Ice Cream Sandwich – $10

Our final dish for the night was the Ice Cream Sandwich which was constructed from a salted peanut caramel and milk chocolate parfait. The salty peanuts on the top gave it a distinct taste that cut through the sweet chocolate. I liked how the parfait was chilled and had a solid consistency similar to ice cream but didn’t melt meaning we could take our time enjoying this dessert.

Overall I’m loving this new extension of the menu at Jones the Grocer. It provides a bigger variety from the already tasty selection. I can’t wait until their pizza menu launches to see what dishes they serve up!
