Bread & Circus Wholefoods Canteen, Alexandria

Bread & Circus is a quirky canteen set up at the back of a warehouse at Alexandria. It’s an open plan space with lots of fresh air and right next door is a bakery and cafe creating quite the bustling vibe. They have an ever changing daily menu serving up organic and freshly made wholefoods, so no two visits will ever be the same. The items on the menu all look really healthy, albeit slightly pricey, but I guess that’s the price you pay to avoid processed foods.

The Daily Green (Large) – $9
Something Green (Little) – $6

To start off I get the Daily Green – a blend of organic kale, spinach, cucumber, pineapple, lemon and mint. The green look of the drink is certainly deceptive as it doesn’t taste as vegetabley as I thought it would. Rather the lemon overpowers the drink and it’s quite tangy. Would have been nice to be able to get more of the sweet pineapple and crispy mint! My friend opts for the Something Green which is a kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon cold pressed juice. It’s not too different from mine but isn’t as lemony thankfully, with some sweetness of the apple and celery coming through.

Salad Plate (Regular) – $16

Very shortly after (about 5 minutes) our food comes out, thumbs up for speedy service! There’s a choice of five different salads on the menu and we were told that we could get them all mixed on the salad plate, so of course we chose to get them all. Some of the more memorables salads included the stir-fried broccoli and snow peas which had a beautiful garlic, ginger and chilli dressing; cinnamon roast baby carrots and kamut couscous with minty yoghurt; and shredded cabbage and kale slaw with a sweet yuzu and pomegranate dressing.

The Daily Plate – $27

I wanted something more meaty so opted for the Daily Plate which was an organic inglewood chicken schnitzel with daily salads and horseradish yoghurt. When I saw the price I expected this to be a huge plate, and the waitress even told me that it could feed two people (or one really hungry person), but when the dish came out the portions seemed normal and I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t bigger. Nevertheless the chicken was very tasty; it was a lean schnitzel covered in rosemary sourdough breadcrumbs and wasn’t oily at all. The horseradish yoghurt was sweet and added depth to the chicken.

Overall the food at Bread & Circus is really tasty and the warehouse is the perfect space for these types of quirky canteen/cafes. My only criticism are the prices are above average for a brunch-type meal, but completely understandable since that simply is the price of eating healthy and organic. As much as I appreciate organic ingredients, I’m also happy with regular produce at regular prices. Ahhhh back to the fat life for me :)))))
