Parlour Burger, Wynyard

$10 gourmet burgers are a rarity in Sydney, but head on over to Parlour Burger (next to The Morrison) and you’ll find 5 tasty versions on the menu!

It’s a bit of a surprise that ex-Astral chef Sean Connolly is behind Parlour Burger, the casual dining sibling to The Morrison which has taken over the space where the old bar area was. The bar’s been revamped with an old-school vibe with an inviting mix of comfy cushioned seats, high tables with bar stools and cheeky signs on the walls.

We’re keen to dig into our burgers when we drop by for a Sunday lunch (our Friday night attempt was a fail – the place was way too packed with the after work crowd), but the burgers take a while to come out. I suppose it takes time and effort to create the intriguing Black Widow Burger with its charcoal brioche bun – which I couldn’t resist trying out to see if it tasted any different. I don’t know if it was just my mind playing tricks on me – but it did taste a little “smokier” than the usual brioche buns and much less sweet.

Apart from the signature charcoal bun that gives the burger its name, the Black Widow burger also features a ground beef patty, chipotle mayo and sliced jalapenos (watch out for these fiery ones, they aren’t for the faint-hearted!). The innards of the Black Widow burger are shared by the Original Morrison burger (except for the jalapenos), but I found that the beef patty wasn’t as juicy in the Original version.

There’s also non-beef options available – The Chicken Quinoa Burger is crumbed with a layer of the super grain batter, making it quite crunchy and a little dry, but luckily there’s some tasty caesar dressing to balance it out.

The Fish Butty with a beer battered exterior encasing a moist fish fillet, drizzled in classic tartare sauce and matched with house made pickles is also a hit.

We also tried some of their sides – the Duck Fat Chips come in a generous serving which we struggled to finish and while they weren’t as crunchy as I had thought, I liked that they were hand cut. They would’ve been better with a sauce on the side though.

The Beer Battered Onion Rings on the other hand were a surprisingly small portion for the price (I counted 5 rings for $5)  and were a bit too oily for my liking.

After trying out most of what’s on offer at Parlour Burger, we’re pretty impressed by the value for money that Parlour Burger offers, especially by CBD standards.
