Charlie & Co Burgers, Westfield Sydney

Charlie & Co Burgers has been a resident of the swanky Westfield Sydney food court almost from the beginning and I recall heading on over to try their gourmet burgers back when they first opened. For some reason, I passed over their signature wagyu beef burger in favour of a more exotic crab burger and was left a bit disappointed by my choice back then.

This time, I wasn’t going to make the same mistake (and not just because the crab burger doesn’t seem to be on their menu anymore). The Mighty Charlie Burger is one of their wagyu beef offerings and lives up to its name – it is a tall tower of goodness with a juicy wagyu beef patty, a fried free-range egg, a slice of crispy bacon, caramelised onions and a mixed leaf salad with tomato. The bun is fluffy too, which just adds to the overall height of the burger. There’s no other way to tackle the burger other than to crush the fluffiness out of the bun and cut it into more manageable bite sizes.

Mighty Charlie Burger, $16

I enjoyed the combo of flavours in the Mighty Charlie Burger – most elements of the burger were done well, although I couldn’t taste the aioli which was supposed to be in the burger.

South American Burger, $14

My dining companion opted for something a bit different from the norm – the South American Burger which mixes things up with a flavoursome Argentinian chimichurri sauce and some addictive smoked chilli mayonnaise to flavour the wagyu beef patty, aged cheddar and caramelised onions. The burger isn’t quite as tall as the Mighty Charlie, but is packed full of flavour to make up for it.

Parmesan and Truffle Fries $8, smoked chilli mayonnaise sauce, $1

No burger dining experience is complete without a side of fries and Charlie & Co continues the gourmet theme with their crunchy (and indulgent) Parmesan and Truffle Fries. The truffle is fairly subtle here, and the tasty smoked chilli mayonnaise sauce we have chosen goes well with the fries as the truffle doesn’t overpower it.

There’s some reserved seating for patrons of Charlie & Co Burgers off the side of the main food court area and while it isn’t a full blown restaurant, the quality of their burgers is a certainly cut above your standard food court fare. The little bit of exclusivity in the reserved seating area as well may be a godsend for the days that it seems impossible to get a table in the busy Westfield food court.
