PappaRich, Broadway

I have visited the ever popular PappaRich in Chatswood on many occasions now and still haven’t finished eating my way through their extensive menu. Today I’m paying a visit to their newish Broadway outlet which is no less popular than their Chatswood store, with a queue still hanging around at 2pm on a Saturday arvo.

We start off our Malaysian feast with a selection of their freshly made roti – a fluffy Roti Canai served with a flavoursome Indian Tandoori Chicken and a crispy, flaky Roti Telur (with egg woven throughout the bread) to mop up the tasty Curry Chicken with chilli sauces on the side of varying heat.

Next up, their Satay Skewers were grilled beautifully and the classic satay marinade with tumeric and lemongrass had infused into the chicken and beef to create a very tasty dish. The meat on the satay skewers alone is flavoursome enough, but there’s additional peanut sauce on the side for some extra kick.

The revelation of the day were the supremely addictive Pappa Deep Fried Chicken Skins, which I had been quite skeptical about (thinking about the calories) but the moment I popped one of these crispy morsels into my mouth, I couldn’t stop going back for more! The crunch of each piece of chicken skin is very satisfying and the flavour is that indescribable taste of fatty goodness – although surprisingly, the chicken skin isn’t all that oily.

The PappaRich rendition of the classic Hainan Chicken Rice was a bit average compared to their other stellar dishes we had tasted previously as the chicken rice wasn’t as fragrant as expected. But the steamed chicken itself was nice and smooth.

I enjoyed the Pappa noodle dishes much more than their rice dishes –  the Pappa Char Koay Teow had plenty of flavour packed into the wok-fried flat noodles and came with prawns, eggs and bean sprouts, although wasn’t particularly spicy compared to some other renditions. The Pappa Fried Rice Noodles contained a similar mix, but was more Thai inspired in flavour in terms of the sauce coating the chunky rice noodle strands.

To wash down all this delicious food, I chose the refreshing Ribena Melon drink as I can never resist the classic blackcurrant flavour. The drink actually comes with some juicy lychees as a bonus fruit too!

Speaking of sweet things, we delved back into the roti menu for dessert and were quite impressed by the selection of sweet roti on offer. The fluffy Roti Bom is super sweet, served with condensed milk and sugar while the Roti Kaya is more exotic, with fragrant coconut jam laced throughout the roti. My favourite of the sweet roti trio is the incredible Roti Banana and Vanilla Ice Cream which is the perfect mix of hot and cold, thanks to the flaky roti with gooey banana pieces folded into it and the ice cream.

Apart from all the bread, there’s also iced desserts on the menu which are probably for the more curious diners – the Pappa ABC Special with Vanilla Ice Cream features a slightly odd combo of red beans, grass jelly and corn kernels, heaped on top of some flavoured shaved ice and a dollop of vanilla ice cream for good measure. The verdict from the table is that every component in the dessert works together, except for the corn.

PappaRich Broadway spreads the Malaysian chain’s popularity to different corner of Sydney (with a PappaRich Parramatta soon to be on its way too!). From their delicious roti to their myriad of classic noodle and rice dishes, there’s something for everyone at this reasonably priced one stop shop for Malaysian cuisine – but be prepared to wait for a table as the hungry crowds don’t seem to be letting up.
