The Local Press, Lilyfield

Tucked away in the suburban area of Lilyfield is The Local Press, a café gem with great food and prices. It’s situated in a small cluster of shops with a playground right next door – perfect for families!

Today we’re visiting on a Sunday and are surprised to discover that the kitchen closes at 1pm, but thankfully we got in at 12:50pm. There were heaps of people arriving after 1pm trying to order food only to get turned away, so until they change their opening hours make sure to get in earlier if you’re visiting on a Sunday.

Mixed Berry Smoothie – $5.50

I start off my meal with a mixed berry smoothie which is served in a jar, right on trend with the current café scene. My friend finds my liking for jars too mainstream and jokes that they’re going to one day open a bar serving drinks in helmets or boots in an attempt to turn something crazy mainstream…until that day… Anyways, back to the smoothie, it’s thick and fruity and just a classic refreshing blend.

Toasted Quinoa & Grilled Eggplant Tabouli with House Cured Salmon, Candied Walnuts & Soft Boiled Egg – $16.50

Onto food, I opt for the toasted quinoa with tabouli, salmon and egg, which turns out to be a generous portion. The picture here somehow makes it look like it was served on a plate but it was actually served in a bowl, so there’s quite a lot of depth to this dish! It’s light and tasty with nice textures from the walnut. There’s a lot of parsley in the dish which can get a bit boring after a while and I only wish there was more salmon as it disappeared way too quickly, but otherwise it’s a great dish that is quite affordable as well.

Corn Fritters with Salsa de Chile Guajillo, House Cured Salmon, Poached Egg, Avocado, Tomato & Fresh Herb Salsa – $15.50

My friends get the corn fritters which are amazing – they’re packed full of corn and aren’t super doughy unlike some other cafes. The salsa has a nice kick of chilli, while the runny poached egg and avocado just add depth to an already super tasty dish.

For now, The Local Press seems like a local’s secret that hasn’t hit the mainstream masses yet. With its great food, prices and family friendly environment, it’s a winner in my books and a nice quieter alternative to the busy Balmain/Rozelle cafe scene.
