Gowings Bar and Grill (Breakfast), Sydney CBD

I have to admit I’m not much of a morning person, which means on weekdays I hardly ever go out for breakfast before work. But I will make an exception more often now, because I had a lovely start to my week when I dropped into Gowings Bar and Grill to try out some of the newer items on their breakfast menu – nothing like a great meal to fight Mondayitis!

One breakfast item which immediately caught my eye was the Black Truffle Scrambled Eggs with Asiago cheese, grilled asparagus, lemon balm and 11 seeded bread. I didn’t find the black truffle flavour particularly overpowering in the scrambled eggs. In fact the zestiness from the lemon balm was the more dominant flavour, making it a refreshing take on scrambled eggs. I think the serving size was just right for breakfast so that it was a satisfying and filling breakfast, but didn’t weigh you down for the rest of the morning.

To balance out our breakfast, we also shared a beautiful Watermelon Salad with sweet, juicy cubes of watermelon mixed with crunchy pomegranate seeds, pomegranate molasses, fresh mint and ricotta. It’s a refreshing way to get some fresh fruit into the mix early in the morning and the ricotta in the salad gives it a contrasting savoury hit of flavour.

I had some major food envy when Vivian’s Eggs Rockefeller came out though – a gorgeous looking egg topped with black caviar made for a super luxe (and tasty) breakfast! I’ll definitely be coming back to try it out when I’m feeling like an indulgent breakfast one morning.

In my mind, Gowings Bar and Grill is more of a lunch or dinner type of place and I hadn’t thought of going there for breakfast before. But since Gowings Bar and Grill is essentially the QT Hotel restaurant, it makes sense that they’re also a breakfast option for those doing business breakfasts in the CBD. Their sharp, trendy décor and hidden location, elevated above the coffee crowds down on the street level make it an ideal spot for a business breakfast and I’ll be returning next time I have a breakfast catch up!
