West Juliett, Marrickville

My friend has been raving about the breakfast at West Juliett for a while now and finally, I have been able to head over early enough on a Saturday (they’re closed Sundays) to try it out.

It’s a bustling café in a corner shop space in suburban Marrickville close to the local aquatic centre. It has an unassuming exterior, but inside it is airy and has a lovely, contemporary wooden fitout.

The first thing that caught my eye was the Bacon Egg Roll with a tasty sounding chilli marmalade aioli. I was pleased to find out that it was served with a light leafy salad with a balsamic dressing since the menu made no mention of it. It was a decent sized roll for the price, considering there were generous amounts of bacon in the roll and the egg yolk was still deliciously runny too. The chilli marmalade aioli wasn’t as strong as I thought it would be, but was still a nice creamy accompaniment to the other elements of the roll.

The boy chose the Haloumi version of the Egg Roll and wasn’t too disappointed either (though he stole some of my bacon to keep it from being a vegetarian meal). The chewy grilled haloumi was a great complement to his runny sunny side up egg as well.

I had some serious food envy over my friend’s chosen dish of Mushrooms on Toast. The sautéed mushrooms were so flavoursome and juicy, while the burnt onions added that extra layer of flavour and texture.

I enjoyed my mocha, the coffee was strong but nicely tempered by the chocolate drizzled within.

The boy and my friend both ordered fresh juices (watermelon for one and orange, grapefruit and mandarin for the other) and these were quite refreshing, particularly the orange, grapefruit and mandarin combo which isn’t commonly seen around in cafes.

Fresh Watermelon and Orange, Grapefruit and Mandarin Juices, $5.90 each

I’m a fan of the casual atmosphere and contemporary décor at West Juliett, as well as the relatively reasonable prices (compared to the city) for the quality of dishes and serving sizes.
