Joe Black, Surry Hills

Nestled into one of the many side streets of Surry Hills near Museum is a quiet achiever by the name of Joe Black. Step inside and you’ll find trendy wall art (think giant moustaches, an ape evolution mural and a modified “Cityrail” map), which is the perfect setting to indulge in some bang on trend dishes like the Slow Cooked Pork Belly Roll and Caramel Cronut we had.

The Slow Cooked Pork Belly Roll showcased their super tasty pork belly, with a soy and ginger glaze which ramped up the flavour. The first few bites were heaven, but after a while the miche roll got too much and I ended up with bread overload. My friend helped me polish it off, so that we could tuck into their Caramel Cronut for dessert!

I hadn’t tried a cronut yet, despite all the hype around them and was keen to see what all the fuss was about. All I can say is that the flaky croissant pastry layers go surprisingly well with a dusting of sugar and a bit of donut style glazing and the delectable caramel kept things interesting. I’m now even more intrigued and will be trying out some other renditions around town!

Caramel Cronut, $5

The prices are unexpectedly reasonable for a trendy Surry Hills cafe that’s so close to the CBD and the food is pretty decent too – all the essential ingredients for a new go-to brunch spot!
