Public Dining Room, Mosman

Balmoral Beach is pretty as a picture when the sun is shining in Sydney and what better way to enjoy the view than at the sleek Public Dining Room, a more upmarket option for brunch than the always packed Boathouse.

We’ve got a booking for 10am as we want to try out the breakfast menu (last orders for breakfast are at 10.30am) and the group I’m dining with all decide to get the Full Breakfast, while I opt for the Shakshuka instead.

My choice paid off as the Shakshuka is pretty tasty – the eggs are baked in a hot mini pan with flavoursome layers of tomato, red onion, capsicum and eggplant, topped off with a mound of ricotta salata. There’s a thick slice of rustic loaf on the side for you to mop up all the saucy goodness too.

The Full Breakfast on the other hand, isn’t large enough to satisfy the boys on the table, despite its promising name. The combo of pork chipolatas, cevapcici (grilled mince meat, southeastern European style) and free range bacon had appealed to their carnivorous instincts, but the servings of each weren’t all that generous. Luckily there’s some portobello mushroom, spinach, slow roasted tomato and your choice of free range eggs (poached for the boy) to help bulk up the breakfast a bit.

It’s easy to see why the Public Dining Room is so popular, with the stunning views of Balmoral Beach providing the perfect backdrop for a lazy (but still classy) weekend brunch. The breakfast menu has quite a few classics on it, with a few trendier items (like the Shakshuka) thrown into the mix too.
