Burnt Orange, Mosman

Tucked away in Mosman is Burnt Orange, a cafe sitting amongst the pristine bushland of Middle Head, featuring sweeping views of Sydney Harbour.

For those visiting for the first time, there’s a small carpark situated right next to Burnt Orange, but you’ve got to get in early as these spaces fill up quickly. Parking is also charged at $5/hour, so you’re better off parking your cars within suburban Mosman and carpooling in one car to get down to the carpark. We made the mistake of taking two cars and ended up waiting for 15 minutes before a spot finally opened up – yikes!

From the outside, Burnt Orange looks like a quaint, little cottage. The interior is equally cute, featuring a boutique retail store selling a variety of goods including clothes, homewares, gifts and snacks. As you walk further, you’ll enter the dining area which is predominantly situated on a wraparound verandah, providing gorgeous views from wherever you sit.

Fresh Fruit Smoothie (Mango, Passionfruit, Orange) – $7.70
Fresh Juice (Watermelon/Ginger) – $7.70

We start off our meal with some fresh fruit drinks. I opt to create my own fresh juice mix of watermelon and ginger whilst Yvn gets the refreshing Mango, Passionfruit, Orange smoothie which has a nice consistency (not too thick!).

Eggs Benedict with Tasmanian Smoked Salmon – $22

The cafe kitchen is very efficient and our food is brought out not long after. Yvn opts for the eggs benedict which features free range poached eggs on toasted brioche, hollandaise sauce and Tasmanian smoked salmon. The egg is perfectly poached with a runny centre , going well with the delicious hollandaise and the slivers of smoked salmon. Although it looks like quite a light breakfast, it’s surprisingly filling thanks to the brioche.

Breakfast Board – $22

I get the breakfast board which features house-smoked trout, grilled haloumi, avocado and a soft-boiled egg served with Avoca brown bread. On the side is also a roasted capsicum and almond dip, along with a parsley vinaigrette. I loved the presentation of this dish as it lets you match different components together. The trout was a winner, along with that roasted capsicum and almond dip which was so tasty when smothered all over the haloumi. The only thing I didn’t like about this dish was the bread which was quite dense, and I don’t feel it matched the other elements that well. I would have been quite happy to just have a nice side of sourdough toasted served up instead.

Overall, I’m loving Burnt Orange. It has a beautiful view with tasty food and is reasonably priced given its location. A great place to spend a lazy weekend watching the harbour or to feast at after bushwalking through Middle Head.
