Sefa Kitchen, Bondi

Sefa Kitchen in Bondi is something a bit different for the part of the beachy suburb, situated on the strip of restaurants on Bondi Road, just before you wind down to the beach. The fitout reminds me more of something you’d expect to see in the inner west – rustic and cosy with exotic touches on the walls playing on their Middle Eastern heritage.

I get into the spirit by ordering the Egyptian Tea to start while waiting to order our brunch. It was a lovely marriage of floral and sweet thanks to the rose, tempered by some fresh mint from their herb garden out the back. Sefa really knows how to make black tea more exciting! I absolutely loved it and had to fend off my friends from finishing off the rest of the teapot, though they had ordered themselves a fresh, healthy juice of the day (featured apple, beetroot and kale) and a soy cappuccino made with their aromatic and full-bodied Hero Blend.

Egyptian Tea, $4.50

Juice of the Day, $7

Soy Cappuccino, $3.80

I enjoy the intensely flavoured dishes in Middle Eastern cuisine, so I had a hard time picking what to order off the menu at this gem of a restaurant. Luckily I had a couple of friends with me who were willing to share dishes so we could all try a bit of everything.

I settled on Poached Eggs, which were perfectly poached and drizzled with a delicious garlic infused yoghurt and served with tangy mushrooms on the side for a twist on your usual brunch fare. I also ordered a side of Merguez Sausage to up the meat factor in my dish and was glad I did, as it added a tasty, spiced beef heft to the dish.

My friend chose the Merguez Sausages with Fried Eggs and Sweet and Sour Mushrooms, which was pretty similar to my dish after I added the the extra side of sausage. The fried eggs weren’t cooked all the way through, so the yolk was still runny and lovely on top. There was also a plate of grilled halloumi with toast on the side – I’m not sure which dish it came with, but the halloumi was creamy and complemented the dishes well.

Merguez Sausages with Fried Eggs, $16.50

My other friend went for the Fried Lamb Mince with Tahini and Grape Molasses, swapping out the usual hommus and pomegranate molasses it is usually served with. The lamb mince was very well seasoned, packed full of tasty goodness and was an interesting pairing with the dense tahini paste.

The dishes are not large here at Sefa, but the vibrant flavours in the food and drinks leave you and your tastebuds feeling very satisfied. Along with friendly service and a gorgeous decor, it’s a great place to catch up with friends for a bite.
