I haven’t ventured over to Kirribilli wharf before but had heard of Anvil Coffee & Co, a cute little cafe that is wedged in right on the wharf, making the most of its prime harbour front location. We went to check it out one weekend and there isn’t much seating inside, but managed to score one outside without a wait next to the slightly blurry window.
The menu is short but cheerful with all day breakfast on the cards. DK made a beeline for the Buttered Arabian Eggs, which were a hit – impeccably presented poached eggs, seasoned with chilli, flakes of black salt, some caramelised onions and lemon juice burnt butter. All that was served on two slices of sourdough toast and a smear of Greek yoghurt for good measure. A great flavour combo which elevated your regular poached eggs brunch dish to another level of tastiness.

I went for a Mocha and the vaguely named Something Savoury, which wasn’t quite as exciting as DK’s dish. It pretty much consisted of a generous slathering of smashed peas, broad beans and leek on sourdough toast, along with a tasty chorizo sausage to up the flavour stakes. Most of the chorizo was hidden under the leafy herb salad (mostly rocket and mint), which gave the dish many shades of green and made me feel healthier than I usually do at brunchtime.

Anvil Coffee & Co is nice for a brunch that’s off the beaten path, with a stunning view of Sydney Harbour to boot as well. It’s a refreshing change not to have to line up for a decent brunch around town!
