Rawson’s, Epping

We were pleasantly surprised to find the stylish Rawson’s hidden away in The Epping Club, deep in Sydney’s suburbia. At the helm of this modern restaurant is Executive Chef Nick Whitehouse, who has worked in a number of Michelin starred restaurants around the world and who brings contemporary flair to the menu at Rawson’s.

We visited for lunch on a weekend and tried out their great value menu, on which you can dine a la carte or go for 2 courses ($29.90) or 3 courses ($39.90), choosing the courses from specific sections of the menu. We started off with lightly seared slivers of fresh tuna drizzled with a zesty yuzu ponzu sauce and a creamy Garden Pea Risotto jazzed up with some fragrant truffle shavings on top. Both were delicious ways to get our tastebuds going for round 2.

Onto mains, one of the lighter options was the Cold Olive Oil Poached Tasmanian Salmon served with a herb cultured cream and pickled cucumbers. This dish would be even better in summer, as its served at room temperature with the moist salmon flaking apart nicely – it’s easy to see why this is one of Rawson’s best sellers.

The Smoked Rump Cap is a classic dish with the medium cooked beef pairing well with their rich red wine jus and artfully scorched onions. We also had some steamed greens, chunky chips and delicious onion rings as sides to balance out all the meat in the meal.

Our meal ended on a sweet note, thanks to their creamy vanilla bean Panna Cotta served with a refreshing strawberry sorbet and stewed rhubarb for a hint of tartness and their deconstructed Snickers dessert which is off their dinner menu. The melding of each of the elements of the “Snickers” really ended up tasting like a particularly delectable version of the real deal.

We were pretty impressed by how reasonably priced Rawson’s is considering the quality and execution of their dishes. In our books, the contemporary decor and spacious surrounds makes it an ideal candidate for delicious group meals and family catch-ups that won’t break the bank.
