Kitchen by Jamie, Maroubra

Classic British cuisine is not one that you find thrown into the mix in the Sydney food scene all that often beyond our gastropubs – which is somewhat surprising given our city’s colonial heritage.

So we were pleasantly surprised to find it front and centre on the menu when we visited Kitchen by Jamie, a casual restaurant on a quiet suburban strip in Maroubra that we discovered through the Australia Good Food Guide and was recently visited by British celebrity chef Rick Stein who sounds like he was searching for some decent British fare in Sydney when he was last here.

Owner chef Jamie Dyball is also from the United Kingdom and celebrates this through his cooking, using quality ingredients to showcase contemporary renditions of British classics like his popular Sunday Roast. There’s also some hints of French influence on the menu, like the deliciously indulgent Duck Pate with red onion relish and homemade brioche that we started off our dinner with.

Our other entree was the Fish Taco, featuring a generously sized piece of beer battered barramundi, drizzled in a tasty chipotle mayo and served with pickled cucumber, in possibly the crispest tortilla we’ve ever had.

For our mains, we went with the Crispy Pork Belly which did not disappoint, with a satisfying layer of crackling on top of buttery meat paired with a rich apple sauce and homemade jus. It was also served with a side of super crunchy fries that we dipped in the jus, and we also went with the option of having a side of black pudding on top, which actually was deliciously flavoursome even for someone who is not usually a fan of black pudding.

Our other main was the Osso Buco Stew which was hearty and comforting (particularly as it was served with a silky mash), the veal fell away easily as we cut through it and it was richly flavoured.

We were almost too full by this stage for dessert, but found room for the delectable Sticky Date Pudding which was much softer than others we’ve tried. Kitchen by Jamie’s rendition also features an indulgent caramel ice cream, toffee sauce with some crumble for the crunch factor.

We enjoyed our culinary journey through some British classics with a modern twist at Kitchen by Jamie – his dedication to quality ingredients and execution shines through with every dish. It’s no wonder Rick Stein gave his seal of approval to this hidden gem when he was in town.
