Ever since I had what was most possibly the best pies ever from Fergbaker in Queenstown, I thought I was doomed to ever find a product of similar quality within Sydney. That was until my friends introduced me to The Pie Tin, a small pie shop tucked away just off the main thoroughfare of Newtown, King Street.

Newtown is an area I don’t visit that often, although the few times I’ve been there the food has been quite good (with the exception of one African restaurant…but that’s a story for another day). Newtown is known for the vast number of Thai restaurants in the area and so that is our choice of dinner cuisine on this night.
Newtown isn’t too far from the CBD but it might as well be a world away, with much friendlier service and quite a few interesting restaurants and bars all clustered around the main street. Tonight we are going to a surprise birthday party for one of our friends at a late dinner sitting at Bloodwood, which apparently is one of the most popular restaurants in the neighbourhood.

We don’t venture out to the foodie wonderland that is Newtown much but today we decide to check out Grub and Tucker, one of the many restaurants on King Street. The vibe of the place fits in with the breezy weather – kind of a beachy restaurant with flaking polish on their wooden furniture, high back rattan chairs and padded cushions.

The other night, I went to watch the University of Sydney’s Med Revue “Beauty and the Deceased” and can I just say, it is one of the most brilliant student productions I have ever seen. But before that we needed to grab dinner and conveniently enough, Newtown is right next door and known for having Sydney’s best Thai food.
Even on a Wednesday night, Newtown is quite busy and the restaurants are full of either workers or night students. We must have walked past at least 20 Thai restaurants before deciding on Newtown Thai II based on a friend’s recommendation.
Excuse Me Waiter is a documented food adventure run by two hungry Gen Y food fanatics DK & Yvn. We can often be found roaming Sydney in search of interesting foods from food courts to high-end restaurants.
