Harajuku Gyoza, Potts Point

If you ever get the chance to visit Harajuku in Tokyo, you’ll realise that it is known for its youthful culture, playful costumes and outfits, along with constant bustling crowds. The newly opened Harajuku Gyoza in Potts Point encapsulates this atmosphere perfectly. There’s a giant cartoon gyoza on the wall, Japanese Nintendo-like midi tunes playing in the background and staff screaming OSAKE WO HAIRIMASUUUU (pour the sake!) whenever someone orders the rice wine. Yep, this place is the closest thing you’ll find to an Izakaya Bar in Japan.

The Californian at Santa Barbara, Potts Point

Bright neon lights are nothing out of the ordinary on the main street in Kings Cross, although you wouldn’t really expect a fantastic bar and restaurant at the top of the colourful staircase with random phrases in different languages emblazoned on each step leading up to Santa Barbara.  The old Piano Room venue under the famous Coke sign has been transformed into one of the Drink ‘n’ Dine group’s newest ventures (the team behind The Abercrombie, The Carrington and The Forresters) with their signature blend of eclectic themed decor and American fusion menu with some Asian and Mexican/Latin twists (think Korean Fried Chicken, kimchi and tacos).

The Fish Shop, Potts Point

The Fish Shop is yet another one of Merivale’s many eateries, this time located just a bit out of the CBD at Potts Point. I’m here on a Friday night and the vibe is pretty great filled with a mix of young adults, workers and groups of friends catching up. It’s packed full but not too busy that we can’t get a seat, and throughout the night they manage to maintain a full seated crowd without a line forming at the door.

The Village, Potts Point

A fresh new bar has popped up in Potts Point on Kellett Way, a little alley off the main street. The name evokes images of a cosy, homely kind of place but the modern vibe of the bar is evident as soon as you walk through the courtyard into the black walled interior. There’s daily specials scrawled in white on the ceiling and framed black and white images of Marilyn Monroe on the wall, mixing up elements of vintage and contemporary design.
