New Shanghai, Chatswood Chase

New Shanghai is one of those few Chinese restaurants which just keeps getting better, and has since managed to open 4 branches across Sydney. Tonight we’re visiting their second Chatswood branch which is located in the higher-end Chatswood Chase Shopping Centre (the other one is located in Lemon Grove) and the menu has gotten significantly larger since I last visited a couple years back.

Red Lantern Hot Pot & BBQ Restaurant, Eastwood

Mini personal hotpots seem to be the latest craze in the world of hotpot restaurants and they are now available at the newly opened Red Lantern Hotpot Restaurant in Eastwood (not to be confused with Luke Nguyen’s Red Lantern restaurants). It is located on the strip of restaurants directly across from Eastwood Public School and true to its name, this Chinese restaurant has red lanterns hanging throughout the interior, with plenty of tables for groups to indulge in the buffet together.

Taste of Shanghai, Eastwood

Taste of Shanghai is one of the better Shanghainese restaurants in the Eastwood area; since opening several years ago it has constantly been busy and serves up delicious food. Whenever I get a dumpling or xiaolongbao (steamed pork dumpling) craving, Taste of Shanghai is where I go. Upon walking past it recently, I noticed posters promoting four different xiaolongbao variations. I can’t ever resist new and interesting food, so I was definitely coming back to try it out.

Shanghai Memory, Ashfield

As most Sydneysiders know, Ashfield is known as Little Shanghai with good reason – its main street is lined with various Shanghainese restaurants, all spruiking their xiaolongbao steamed pork dumplings which are often their signature dish. If you’re not a local, it may be hard to differentiate between all these restaurants but luckily tonight I’m with my best friend who has lived around the area for a long time.

Mr. Wong, Wynyard

The newest addition to the Merivale restaurant empire is Mr. Wong – a slick Cantonese restaurant specialising in dim sum, with some modern twists. It opened last Friday with a trio of high profile chefs at the helm: Dan Hong and Jowett Yu of Ms. G’s and also Eric Koh, the head dim sum chef from the Michelin starred restaurant Hakkasan in London. I’ve been looking forward to trying this new yum cha destination ever since I caught wind of it a few months ago and we booked ourselves a table for Saturday lunchtime, the day after the opening.
