After spotting an incredible deal for an 8 course degustation with sparkling wine for 2 on Ouffer for $99, the boy and I decided to head to The Devonshire at Surry Hills to try out the degustation menu which is usually priced at $80 per person.

There are a lot of cheap fast food options for Mexican food in Sydney but the craze for tacos has moved up a notch with the arrival of Mejico, which oozes upmarket trendiness in its décor and menu. It sits right next to Jamie’s Italian on Pitt Street and is already packed to the rafters when we drop in only a week after its opening. If you haven’t made a booking, then your best bet is to take a seat at the bar area at the front next to the open kitchen because you can order anything from the full menu and drinks too.

Essen is one of those restaurants that hide in plain sight – countless people must go past this busy strip of Broadway every day on buses and not notice this spacious yet homely German restaurant just a block away from The Abercrombie. They serve up hearty fare with plenty of different kinds of beer (naturally) to transport the essence of German cuisine to the heart of Sydney.

A couple years back I went to this restaurant in Strathfield which is known for their chilli chicken. When I say chilli chicken – I mean marinated in chilli, cooked in chilli and served with chilli on a hotplate. I still have horrid memories of this place because of that dish destroying all my taste buds in seconds but somehow my friends convinced me to go back.

The quirkily named Fix St James is another restaurant that hides in plain sight, just a stone’s throw away from the David Jones Elizabeth Street entrance. It’s a contemporary Modern Australian restaurant with some cheeky touches like their cute blackboard wall. They also seem to take their wine pretty seriously judging by their extensive wine list and friendly suggestions about which wines will suit our amateur palates tonight.
