Miss Peaches’s soul food kitchen dishes up casual dining in the form of American comfort food, with a funky bar decked out in colourful furniture and callouts to Southern culture emblazoned on their exposed brick walls.

Izakaya Samurai, Neutral Bay

Tucked away on the main Military Road of Neutral Bay is the Japanese restaurant Izakaya Samurai (previously known as Sushi Samurai). They’re part of a wider Japanese restaurant group which also includes Yebisu Izakaya. The food and drinks menu here is huge and can be ordered on their iPad selection system (similar to Yebisu Izakaya), with multiple categories including fried dishes, sushi and sashimi, yakitori, rice/noodles and more! Most of the dishes are small and designed for sharing (izakayas are traditionally drinking establishments in Japan with small bar dishes) so it’s ideal to visit in a group.

Sydney’s Backyard @ Opera Bar, Circular Quay

The summer sun, an Aussie barbeque and grand views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House – there really is no other venue like Opera Bar! This month, they’ve transformed their outer seating into “Sydney’s Backyard” – think picnic dining tables, Hills Hoists (complete with laundry strung up), native plants and of course a barbeque serving up Aussie favourites. It’s family friendly with a kids area (Twister and giant Connect Four), live entertainment and even a lemonade and slushie stand. This fun set up is only going to be around until the end of January so it’s best to check it out soon.

It’s a three-storey building that has seen an inner transformation, and the second floor is where all the foodie action happens.

The Local Bar, Town Hall

It’s refreshing to see a new dining precinct in the CBD open up just a stone’s throw away from Pitt Street Mall. This is the courtyard area outside the new ANZ building on Castlereagh Street which boasts a variety of eateries ranging from Malaysian food at a Sedap stall, to salads at Stockmarket (yes UNSW kiddies, the same Stockmarket salad bar from upper campus!!) and a gourmet rotisserie. I’m looking forward to trying everything out eventually, but today I’ve chosen to check out The Local Bar which is looking like a popular Friday lunchtime choice judging by the crowds who are already there by 12 noon.
