Marukame Udon, Chatswood

I was quite surprised to see Marukame Udon opening up in Chatswood, because we had previously had it on my recent trip to Hawaii and hadn’t realised that it was a global franchise. I was even more pleasantly surprised to find out that Marukame Udon is actually a sister store to Hakata-Maru Ramen which is in the Market City food court. Seems like fast, tasty and affordable Japanese noodle canteens are taking over Sydney.

Highlights of Honolulu, Hawaii

We had a whirlwind trip to the main Hawaiian island of Oahu late last year (thank you Jetstar 2 for 1 sales!) and because we were only there for 4 full days, we tried to pack in as many activities and meals as we could to make the most of it. Izakaya Samurai, Neutral Bay

Tucked away on the main Military Road of Neutral Bay is the Japanese restaurant Izakaya Samurai (previously known as Sushi Samurai). They’re part of a wider Japanese restaurant group which also includes¬†Yebisu Izakaya. The food and drinks menu here is huge and can be ordered on their iPad selection system (similar to Yebisu Izakaya), with multiple categories including fried dishes, sushi and sashimi, yakitori, rice/noodles and more! Most of the dishes are small and designed for sharing (izakayas are traditionally drinking establishments in Japan with small bar dishes) so it’s ideal to visit in a group.

Hakata-Maru Ramen, Haymarket

I am loving all the new options popping up in Sydney for ramen and have heard about Hakata-Maru Ramen, which is in the Market City food court and is a strong contender for one of the tastiest food court versions in town. They serve up the same Hakata style ramen as the more pricey Ippudo, with hearty tonkotsu pork bone broth and thin, straight noodles.

Kobe Jones 11th birthday dinner

It’s no secret that I am a massive fan of Kobe Jones (having blogged twice before already) and am so happy that I can be a part of their birthday celebrations. I still remember the first time I visited them all the way back in 2005 and was blown away by their cooking techniques and flavour combinations. Although some fault them on their price, you don’t visit King Street Wharf for a low-budget meal and each one of my visits has been a great experience.
