Edition Coffee Roasters, Haymarket

For a recent weekend brunch, we visited the newer sibling of Edition Coffee Roasters on trendy Steam Mill Lane in Haymarket and were impressed by what this stylish cafe has to offer.

First up, the sleek, charcoal black decor sets it apart from the light Scandi blond wood used in the original Darlinghurst cafe and signals this cafe’s stronger Japanese influences on the menu, as compared to the fusion elements on the other cafe’s menu.

The coffee here is as smooth and silky as ever, but we found that the food is even more delicious – particularly the standout Udon and Pipis in XO sauce with shaved cured egg, which bursts with umami flavours that are coated all over the chewy noodles and shellfish. This is a pretty richly flavoured dish for brunch, but would be a hit with those who are fans of savoury breakfasts, or don’t mind starting the day with a heavier lunch-style dish.

The Pork Katsu Curry Burger was also a satisfying way to start the day, with the juicy crumbed katsu enhanced with a dollop of comforting Japanese curry, hints of the pickled slaw cutting through the strong flavours, all encased within a fluffy milk bun.

From the small plates menu, we also tried the Japanese Devilled Eggs, which were bite-sized morsels seasoned with Japanese chilli oil and made more refreshing with shiso and arare (Japanese rice cracker balls).

We couldn’t leave without trying Edition Haymarket’s famed Japanese souffle pancake with mango, seasonal stonefruit and cream cheese and were so glad we got this for dessert. It takes a minimum of 20 minutes for the kitchen to cook and is well worth the wait – the souffle pancake itself is incredibly light and airy, yet layered with zesty flavours from the seasonal fruit. It’s a dessert that tastes of an indulgent summer, but still melts in your mouth with every bite.

Edition’s Haymarket cafe has won us over with its brilliant, beautifully plated menu and reasonable price point for the calibre of dishes on offer, to become one of our new brunch favourites. Of course, the sophisticated decor doesn’t hurt either as the setting for a glam brunch catch up.
