Fika Swedish Kitchen, Manly

Tucked away in a laneway in Manly is Fika Swedish Kitchen, a small and homely cafe that opened last year. Characterised by beautiful and modern designs which the Swedish are so well known for, they’ve gone all out to transport you halfway across the world – the concrete floor has been painted to mimic the iconic Segels torg, framed on the walls are famous Swedish brands and in the back corner is even a cupboard selling imported snacks. Attention to detail is key here to their authenticity.

Miss Peaches’s soul food kitchen dishes up casual dining in the form of American comfort food, with a funky bar decked out in colourful furniture and callouts to Southern culture emblazoned on their exposed brick walls.

La Brasserie, Darlinghurst

There’s a French reality TV show filming in Sydney at the moment called “Les Anges de la Télé-réalité” (Angels of Reality) which rounds up previous winners of reality TV shows and places them in another country Big Brother style, with various challenges set to their career aspirations. One of the contestants in the current season is previous Top Chef winner Latifa Ichou, whose challenge was to serve up a 3-course French dinner at La Brasserie to a restaurant full of guests. On the night that we visit, the Latifa’s menu was open to the public for $80 pp and since we had visited La Brasserie in the past, we knew they served up classic French cuisine and couldn’t wait to see what Latifa could spin up with the local chefs.

Marukame Udon, Chatswood

I was quite surprised to see Marukame Udon opening up in Chatswood, because we had previously had it on my recent trip to Hawaii and hadn’t realised that it was a global franchise. I was even more pleasantly surprised to find out that Marukame Udon is actually a sister store to Hakata-Maru Ramen which is in the Market City food court. Seems like fast, tasty and affordable Japanese noodle canteens are taking over Sydney.
