Hemingway’s, Manly (Revisited)

It has been a while since we last visited the charming Hemingway’s on Manly’s beachside promenade.

We were happy to find that the library themed cafe/bar which pays homage to legendary author Ernest Hemingway is still going strong after all these years, now with a new French influenced twist on its menu.

By day, Hemingway’s is a breezy cafe with all day breakfast options such as the delicious Croque Madame toasted sandwich with a decadent bechamel sauce, picture perfect Eggs Benedict and of course, fresh Avocado on Toast or an open Tartine with tomato and balsamic vinegar.

For more substantial lunch options, there’s also a solid range of burgers, including their tasty Fish Burger served with a lemon tartare sauce and crunchy sweet potato fries with aioli, just what you need to enjoy their seaside setting.

When the evening comes around, Hemingway’s turns into a more chic bistro with French influenced options on the menu, like the hearty Pot au Feu beef stew served with a potato puree (also available at lunchtime) and a flavoursome Blue Crab Brandade which is a seafood emulsion bound together with olive oil and potatoes.

For a sweet treat at the end of the meal, we enjoyed the traditional Tarte Tatin and vanilla ice cream, along with their smooth Creme Brulee with a thin layer of sugar giving way to the custard with a satisfying crunch.

The bar at Hemingway’s also punches above its weight throughout the day and into the night. There’s refreshing summer spritzers like the Elderflower & Mint Spritz that work well in the sunshine, the Colombus house cocktail featuring rye whiskey, agave, lemon and mint for an all day option, and an intriguing Negroni aged 50 days in the barrel, which was the favourite with spicy notes accenting the classic cocktail to make it more of a moody, sophisticated option for the evening.
