Plonk Cafe and Restaurant, Mosman

Plonk Cafe and Restaurant is nestled on the water just before the Spit Bridge, seamlessly blending the inside and outside with a small beach area next to the al fresco dining area that is popular with families, as parents can enjoy some gourmet fare while watching their kids having fun on the sand.

The uninterrupted waterfront views on arrival are stunning on a sunny day (even in winter when we visited), with plenty of tables available on the deck which juts out onto the water next to the yachts. The menu on offer at Plonk Cafe showcases plenty of seafood, as expected by its waterside setting and we get started with some of the biggest Seared Scallops we’ve had in Sydney – they were so succulent and paired nicely with a delicious cauliflower puree and pops of asparagus and an intriguing pork cheek crumble.

Seared Scallops, $22

Our other entree was the Salmon and Avocado Salsa Stack, which was much taller than we expected, bursting with fresh flavours from the cooked salmon flakes and the chunks of avocado, drizzled with a zesty orange vinaigrette and complemented by juicy prawns for a great summery dish.

Salmon and Avocado Salsa Stack, $24

For our mains, we continued the seafood theme with the generously sized Fregola Pasta that featured a smorgasbord of shellfish, including balmain bugs, prawns, mussels and clams, all cooked in a tasty smoked napolitana sauce with garlic and chilli for a subtle kick.

Fregola Pasta, $35

We also got the Peking duck risotto to give our tastebuds a break from all the seafood and were rewarded with creaminess that was elevated with wild mushrooms, although the ratio of duck to mushroom was unconventionally skewed more towards the former rather than the latter, so we ended up getting too full to finish off the dish!

Peking Duck Risotto, $30

Plonk Cafe and Restaurant is truly a hidden gem in the north, with a rare blend of well-executed gourmet dishes that complements its spectacular harbourside location and a setting that is family-friendly with a natural built-in play area for the kids in good weather – we can’t wait to visit again when the weather heats up.
