Double Cross Espresso Bar, Crows Nest

We’re always up for a bit of good fusion and when we heard a new Japanese-Italian cafe had opened up in our hood we just had to check it out. It’s name is Double Cross Espresso Bar and is a bright, airy cafe with clean lines running throughout its modern interior and has some interesting outdoor seating options too for those who like the sidewalk vibes and don’t mind sitting on the floor.

We started off with Matcha Lattes (hot one for me, chilled one for my friend) and it set the tone nicely for the rest of the fusion lunch which followed.

I had my eye on the Mentaiko Pasta and wasn’t disappointed at all – while the spaghetti didn’t have that many ingredients, the blend of creme fraiche with a generous amount of spicy fish roe sprinkled throughout and chives, together with a perfectly done 63 degree egg on top, was just what I was after – savoury, without being too heavy.

My friend decided to go for the classic Avocado Halloumi which featured smashed avo, chewy grilled halloumi cheese and slices of tomato on crusty sourdough toast. The only “fusion” element to this dish was the Japanese style 63 degree egg which was cooked well so it oozed nicely when she cut into it.

Avocado Halloumi, $10

This casual fusion cafe is a cute spot for a catch up in the lower North Shore – the unconventional pairings of ingredients on their menu make it something a bit different for brunch in this neighbourhood that is packed with cafes.
