One of the newest chic restaurants to hit Sydney is Bowery Lane, located right opposite Swine & Co in the banking district. Compact and charming, it features sleek dark interiors, small booths and an extensive menu covering brunch, dinner and cocktails. Tonight we’re trying a whole bunch of dishes from their dinner menu where a lot of the plates are designed for sharing – sooo excited!
Char Grilled Lamb Ribs – $14
First up were the grilled lamb ribs which were cooked so beautifully that the meat easily slipped off the bone. Coupled with the chimichurri which had a spicy kick to it, this was a winning dish to start the night.
Manchego Croquettes – $14
The croquettes were served next and were surprisingly light, with a nice mix of potato and manchego cheese hidden inside the fried exterior. It’s served with a smoked chilli aioli and once again this entree has quite a nice spicy kick to it.
House Smoked Hickory Salmon – $17
An even lighter entree came out next consisting of smoked salmon served with puffed wild rice, bottarga salad and burnet. I liked how the salmon pieces were served thick and cylindrical and I found that the dish wasn’t particularly “smokey” in flavour compared to most smoked salmon. The textural components were a stand out, with the puffed rice providing a nice crunchy texture to the dish.
Master Kobe Wagyu – $16
Our last entree was the Master Kobe Wagyu beef, with a marble score of 9+ for the inside skir, served with chermoula and lemon. The beef were all nice bite sized chunks and the sweet meat and chermoula complemented the bitter rocket really well.
Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder – $55
Next we were presented with a mammoth lamb shoulder served with lemon garlic dressing and watercress. We only had to poke at it lightly with our knives and forks for the meat to fall off. As expected, it was super tender and didn’t have a strong gamey taste, definitely one of the highlight dishes.
Whole BBQ Organic Chicken – $48
Another large shared main is the BBQ chicken served on a bed of lentils, grains and smoked yoghurt. The chicken was cooked well but I wasn’t a particular fan of the lentils and grains. It might have been due to the lemon juice we squeezed on top didn’t go well with the smoked yoghurt sauce, but the flavours here weren’t as complementary compared to other dishes.
Hershey’s Cookies & Cream and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Milkshakes (500ml) – $7 each
At this point we saw some people drinking milkshakes which looked really good, so we ordered some as well. Opting for classic American confectionery flavours in the form of Hershey’s Cookies & Cream and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, these were true to the flavour but I found them literally to be just a milkshake – they were too milky for my liking and it would’ve been nice had they been thicker (would’ve been better with some ice cream blended in). I also found my milkshake wasn’t cold at all, and it was strange drinking a milkshake just slightly cooler than room temperature.
Duck Ragu – $26
After our large share platters, we also opted for some individual mains. I got the duck ragu pappadelle served with chilli pancetta and parsley. The pasta was cooked beautifully al dente but the dish lacked flavour and seasoning. The ragu just lacked richness and didn’t taste anywhere as good as it looked. It was a shame that I had to add a lot of salt to the dish which only brought the flavours to an average standard.
Pork Cotoletta – $27
Yvn opted for the pork cotoletta which is essentially a large schnitzel, served with coleslaw and aioli. You can’t really go wrong with a schnitzel – not overly oily, meaty and lots of aioli!
Tempura Soft Shell Crab Burger – $22
The last main we shared across the table was the soft shell crab burger. I’m not a huge fan of coriander but it works in the burger, and I particularly liked the small bowl of miso mayonnaise which was served alongside it which added a nice saltiness, complementing the crab beautifully. The bread was a bit dry though and I ended up just picking out the fillings to eat.
Jar of Cookies and Cream – $13
After all our savoury food I was so massively stuffed and didn’t order any dessert, but did manage to get a bite of some others. A lot of people ordered the Jar of Cookies and Cream which contained honeycomb, vanilla, dark chocolate, blueberries and strawberries. Mixed together in the jar, this was absolutely amazing with the crunchy honeycomb and smooth vanilla going beautifully. I was full of food envy and wished that I had ordered my own one after all.
All in all, I am blown away and very impressed by Bowery Lane. Aside from the beautiful space, the food is very impressive, with the type of dishes that are perfect for a great night out with friends. Food brings people together and there’s no doubt that Bowery Lane will be doing the same as well with a very bright future ahead.
