Ben & Jerry’s, Chatswood

Ice cream has got to be one of the world’s best inventions ever. It is delicious all year round, it can be manipulated into practically any flavour and it even sees us through some of the highest and lowest points of our life. This post is about peace, love and ice cream. Yum!

Ben & Jerry’s is an American brand of premium ice cream which has really taken off in recent years in the Australian market. It features a variety of interestingly named flavours and has started expanding their retail presence around Sydney. I first came to know about Ben & Jerry’s (or BJ’s as one of my friends loves to call it…) at uni because they always had a truck giving out free samples. But today I paid for my ice cream (no free truck!) from their newly opened store next to Grill’d at The Concourse, Chatswood. Their decor is extremely colourful and fun, which makes me pretty excited to try out some of their menu items.

Medium Cone/Cup (2 scoops) – $6.90

The first item we try is a double scoop of ice cream in a chocolate and nut coated waffle cone. We’re spoilt for choice today with 19 flavours to choose from and the flavours we decide on include the Coconut Seven Layer Bar (coconut ice cream with coconut and chocolate chunks, walnuts, swirls of cookies and butterscotch) and Sweet Cream & Cookies (sweet cream ice cream with whole and broken chocolate sandwich cookies). The coconut ice cream is thick and creamy, while the walnuts add a good crunchy textural element. The cookies and cream is also tasty – it is similarly thick with lots of cookies and chocolate. To top it off, the nutty cone adds a lot of flavour and tastes like a Cornetto, delicious!

Cookie Cookie Sundae – $8.40

Next up is the Cookie Cookie Sundae to which we have added a scoop of Strawberry Cheesecake (strawberry cheesecake ice cream with strawberries and a thick cookie swirl). By this time, the two of us are dying from sugar and are regretting ordering this. I find that this item has way too many cookies and that they are also crunchy. For a cookie sundae, I would’ve preferred cookies with a soft centre, similar to Subway cookies. Another thing to note is that our scoop of ice cream was hidden beneath the cookies and whipped cream, so that it was already melting away by the time we got to it. We really didn’t need this item and couldn’t finish it either.

In the end, my final verdict is a positive one filled with sugar and happiness. Ben & Jerry’s sells some good dessert items if you’re happy paying a bit extra in comparison to other brands, but their items are best when shared. Don’t make the same mistake as me by over ordering, because after a while you might find yourself with a sugar overload as well!
