Peppers Craigieburn is the quintessential country resort, with manicured grounds, a golf course out the front and a stately building which houses Hickory’s Restaurant where we tried out their High Tea ($38 per head)

You can have the High Tea in their restaurant, or just outside in the lounge area which is where we decide to stake out a spot on the comfy leather sofas to relax and fully enjoy our High Tea.
Our first reaction when we first saw the 3 tiered platter was that there didn’t seem to be much food, but as always, looks can be deceiving when it comes to High Tea. The savouries were a mix of the conventional Finger Sandwiches (made with super fresh ham & cheese), slivers of delicious Beef Carpaccio and tender Beef Teriyaki skewers. The freshness of the produce used in the savouries really shone through and made you realise that this is what a country high tea should be all about; making the most of the abundance of great produce close by.
We moved onto the dainty sweets next, starting with the Rhubarb and Raspberry Panacotta, which had a thinner consistency than others we’ve had – it tasted more like a thin yoghurt with a pops of raspberry and rhubarb coming through from the top layer. The Orange Polenta Cake was a zesty bite sized morsel and much easier to eat than the very rich Chocolate and Caramel Brownie which was delectable, but much too indulgent for either of us to finish.
Finally, we tried their freshly baked Scones which were perfection – fluffy, still moist but with a crispy exterior. The cream and jam served with it were bursting with flavour, again thanks to the high quality produce that’s available from the farms around Bowral. These went down well with our pots of Darjeeling and Irish Breakfast teas which come with unlimited top ups.
We were comfortably satisfied after our High Tea at Hickory’s Restaurant – just enough to fuel us for our drive back to Sydney. It was a lovely setting to enjoy the incredibly fresh food on offer and captured the essence of country luxury.
