Tella Balls Dessert Bar, Dulwich Hill

The buzz around Tella Balls is real – wander inside past the crowds milling outside this bustling Dulwich Hill dessert bar and you’ll find cronuts in all sorts of flavours, their wittily named gelat-dough and plenty of their famous Tella Balls of course.

On first glance, it’s easy to see that Tella Balls have really taken desserts to a whole new level – it’s a little like stumbling into a more stylish, contemporary take on Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory with their staff hard at work creating these sweet treats behind the counter.

With so much to choose from on the menu, we found it hard to narrow down our choices but for the sake of our waistlines, we settled on their Tella Ball Slider, one of their colourful Gelato-dough (which looked like it was straight of out The Simpsons) and their signature Tella Balls Shake.

We were impressed by their delectable Tella Ball Slider which features a scoop of their house made Nutella gelato nestled between the soft halves of a brioche Tella Ball, all drizzled with yet more Nutella. The best part of the slider was that the fluffiness of the Tella Ball meant that the gelato didn’t harden the brioche, so all the textures remained the way they should for maximum enjoyment.

The Gelat-dough wasn’t just pretty to look at – the thin white chocolate donut encasing fell away to reveal classic vanilla gelato, all held together magically in the perfect donut shape by an innovative two-pronged stick. Great fun – to eat for the adults, would be a huge hit with the kiddies too if you have younger diners to please.

Last but not least, the Salted Caramel Tella Balls Shake lived to its billing – we struggled to get through the super sweet milkshake itself after downing the Salted Caramel Tella Ball (not to mention after making our way through the Tella Ball Slider and Gelat-dough first too). The richness of the milkshake means that its best shared, especially if you were planning to tackle multiple desserts like we did!
