Swine & Co, Wynyard

Swine & Co has taken over the old Bavarian Bier Café site on O’Connell Street, glamming things up with a more luxe fit out than its predecessor, although the structural bones of the restaurant have stayed the same. As befits its name, the focus of its menu is pork, pork and more pork in all shapes and forms.

While there’s no doubt that their pork dishes are the stars at Swine & Co, we discover there’s more than just pork on the menu when we drop in for lunch. We grabbed one of their high tables on the side of their bar and settled in to devour some piggy goodness. The service is brisk and efficient, and in no time we’re digging into our reasonably priced light dishes from their lunch menu.

Their Pork Belly Roll was absolutely delicious, with thin slivers of fatty pork belly and crunchy crackling encased in a soft brioche roll. The saltiness from the pork belly is balanced out by some sweet and tangy slaw and overall, the Pork Belly Roll is a rather affordable flavour sensation.

The Suckling Pig Croquettes were also a winner. There was quite a generous serving of these lovely crumbed morsels with a tender pork filling seasoned with herbs. The mustard aioli which accompanied it wasn’t particularly strong but still did the job of keeping the croquettes from being too dry.

The Chicken Schnitzel Roll was a change from all the piggy fare, and while it wasn’t as impressive as the Pork Belly Roll, it still held its own with a nicely crumbed schnitzel paired with some salty speck. The roll could’ve done with more aioli but otherwise was a decent meal on its own.

We had a satisfying and surprisingly affordable lunch at Swine & Co which impressed us with its tasty sandwich and small bites on offer. We’ll definitely be back in the future to try out more of the pork dishes on the dinner menu at this sleek eatery!
