Bay 88, Rushcutters Bay

One of the best things to happen when you’re dining out is to get a discount, I mean who doesn’t love a bit of a saving? So I was pretty excited when I came across Yumtable the other week, a restaurant booking site which offers discounts on some restaurants when you book through them. I did a search for brunch cafes and settled on Bay 88 because I’d get 30% off my bill, #winning!

Bay 88 is located at the back end of Rushcutters Bay, at the quieter residential part of the suburb (about a block away from the park). It also happens to be on the corner of a one way road and I missed the initial turn whilst driving, so make sure you check Google maps properly or you might have to take a long u-turn back like I did. It’s not super packed on the weekend we’re there but it has a steady flow of customers throughout the day and has a pretty chilled vibe.

Breakky Bowl – $16

Some of the options here are super healthy including the Breakky Bowl which consists of sauteed quinoa with mushrooms, corn, Tuscan kale, pomegranate, cottage cheese and two poached eggs. It’s very fresh and healthy tasting and the corn and pomegranate adds some sweet juiciness throughout. It might not look like a lot but it’s quite filling and we struggled to finish it.

Breakky Bruschetta – $16
(+$4.50 avocado; +$4.50 chicken sausage)

For a more carby version of the Breakky Bowl, we also opted to try the Breakky Bruschetta which contained sauteed mushrooms, quinoa, leek, kale pesto and a poached egg on sourdough (along with added sides of avocado and chicken sausage).

Frittata Special – $14
(+$3 for the poached egg)

One of the specials of the day was a choriza frittata and I was also upsold a poached egg with it. It’s light with small pieces of chorizo throughout which was an interesting combination. I think I’d prefer my chorizo on the side next time as it loses its spicy juices when cooked into a frittata. The side salad however was a refreshing change from the heavy frittata, offering juicy orange slices with spinach and almonds.

Overall Bay 88 is a nice, homely cafe offering some tasty healthy brunch options. Never fear though, they’ve also got other items such as pancakes, a big breakky and some meaty lunch options like ragu and lamb shoulder if you’re not after quinoa. Paired with a 30% discount by booking with Yumtable, it’s definitely a winning combination in my books.
