Avila, Bondi

Crepes and cocktails are not a combination that you normally see in Sydney, but the team behind Avila is making it happen just a short stroll away from Bondi Beach. Avila is a charming little eatery and bar with exposed timber throughout and a comfy, laid back vibe in the decor which ties in with its beach side location.

First up we had their Chorizo Crepe  – the wafer thin crepe was topped with chunks of the flavoursome Spanish sausage paired with Swiss cheese, tomato and chilli mayo for extra kick.

The Ocean Trout Crepe is the more refreshing option with fresh slivers of the fish, sour capers, zesty lemon, plenty of avocado and a creamy bechamel sauce. We made the mistake of thinking that these crepes wouldn’t be that filling because they were so thin, but we were stuffed full – especially when we added their comforting South American chicken soup which is available from May and all throughout winter. It was a great accompaniment to the crepes to keep them from being too dry and the soup even came served with its own condiments like extra cream, avocado and seriously the best fetta cheese I’ve ever had!

We rounded out the crepes with a sweet one – their lovely Mocha Crepe had the perfect balance of subtle coffee flavours in the ice cream with the Belgian chocolate which was artfully drizzled around the crepe.

Avila’s cocktails are also top notch, with their classy Julia cocktail coming served on a platter with a champagne shooter on the side as a “palate cleanser” between sips of the delicious fresh passionfruit blended with vodka and liqueur 43. The boy also enjoyed his cocktail of choice – the Monsieur Beasley, which is a twist on the classic sidecar featuring Martell cognac, Cointreau, pressed lemon and some homemade honey and cinnamon syrup.

Monsieur Beasley, $18

The crepes and cocktails at this hidden gem make for an unconventional dinner, but a very enjoyable one and judging by the full house on a Saturday night, other Sydneysiders feel the same way about Avila.
