Hayes Street Wharf Bistro, Neutral Bay

Hayes Street Wharf Bistro is the definition of a hidden gem – the inconspicuous entrance on the slope up from the Neutral Bay wharf opens up to a gorgeous little restaurant that feels like it’s from the bygone glory days of the art deco era.

It’s a full house on the Friday night that we visit and there’s a pleasant buzz throughout the place. We got settled in and picked a couple of entrees and mains from the succinct menu.

We were impressed by the first entree, which was the Seared Bug Tails which were cooked just right, with a nice chewy firmness. They were well-flavoured with a celeriac remoulade and artfully arranged salmon pearls (a.k.a. roe) on the side, and some tasty smashed avocado which tasted a lot like guacamole.

Next was the delicious Scallop and Crab Boudin Blanc, which was a flavoursome white French sausage. The seafood flavours in it were intensified by the rich tomato crab bisque and the pops of black caviar.

For the mains, we went with two of their wagyu beef offerings. Interestingly, both of them were paired with some truffled on the side – the Sticky Wagyu Beef Brisket Bourguignon featured a braised beef brisket with an intense red wine sauce and a delicious truffled mash.

We also had the Wagyu Skirt which wasn’t quite as tender as the Beef Brisket Bourguignon and had more acidic tones to it thanks to the truffle vinaigrette and the various glazed baby vegies.

Dessert was a pretty affair with a delectable, oozing Chocolate Fondant and a refreshing raspberry sorbet to cut through all that cocoa.

We were pleasantly surprised at the calibre of the food at this unassuming restaurant, but it is definitely a quiet achiever and the elegant decor makes for a great date restaurant.
