Cafe 279, Marrickville

A hidden gem in the up and coming foodie haven of Marrickville is Cafe 279, which has been around for years serving up quality, generously sized cafe meals to locals. Their elegantly simple wooden decor, with splashes of colour in the fashion prints on the walls makes it a good choice for a casual catch up with friends on the weekend if you’re in the area.

I dropped in one afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by the hearty, home-cooked flavours in their dishes. I loved their saucy Penne Napolitana with chunks of tasty chorizo and plenty of chilli kick – it was a massive serving for just $13.50 and really satisfied my pasta cravings.

One of their daily blackboard specials was a Chicken Mushroom Risotto – it was the epitome of comfort food for winter, with a rich, creamy base and plentiful chunks of soft chicken and mushrooms to round it all out. It was incredibly good value for the price, considering the calibre of the flavour.

Cafe 279 has a well-earned reputation as a solid cafe in the neighbourhood, with very reasonably priced dishes. Their menu is nothing fancy, but they have perfected their cafe classics and their back to basics approach is refreshing in the sea of trendy Sydney cafes.
