John Smith Cafe, Waterloo

There’s not much around this gem of a cafe in Waterloo, apart from outlets and light industrial warehouses, but it’s worth the stroll from Redfern station to experience their selection of cronuts – there’s Glazed, Cinnamon, Chocolate and my personal favourite – Salted Caramel and Macadamia. I’ve had my fair share of cronuts over the last year or so and the Salted Caramel and Macadamia is hands down one of the best, with sticky, rich salty caramel drizzled over the fluffy layers of pastry, topped off with chopped macadamia nuts for extra crunch factor.

Salted Caramel and Macadamia and Glazed Cronuts, $5 (each)

The Glazed Cronut is also pretty decent, but after having had the gooey Salted Caramel on the other, I found it to be a little dry in comparison. Their vibrant fitout with stripey booths, industrial chic plywood and wire furniture and a glass display case of cronuts running down the middle tells you how proud they are of their baked goodies.

If you find the sweetness a bit too overwhelming – you can wash it down with a fresh cold pressed Watermelon and Mint Juice to break it up, served in a trendy mason jar of course.
