La Piadina is a funky Italian eatery with a tagline that makes it very clear what it doesn’t serve up (“not a bloody pizza”) – it specialises in “piadina”, a thin Italian flatbread that can be used for savoury or sweet dishes.
La Piadina first opened up a small outlet in Bondi, but have recently expanded to a contemporary space in the heart of the Double Bay dining strip, with a playful and bright decor to match its cheeky tagline. The menu features the humble flatbread in all sorts of combinations, all made to order with freshly rolled piadina made in house.
Their breakfast piadina sound delicious for a weekend brunch pick me up, although they also have plenty all-day piadina options. From the breakfast section, we went for the Black Rotolo, which is a tasty rolled wrap featuring black charcoal piadina with salty, crispy pancetta, some soft boiled egg, radicchio, caramelised onions and lime aioli for a flavour hit.

From their all-day special piadina selection, we decided to try the Special #1 which showcases slivers of their Parma Prosciutto (one of the many cured meats on offer) with creamy buffalo mozzarella, fresh cherry tomato and rocket for a mix of lighter flavours in this fold-over style piadina.

We couldn’t leave without trying one of their dessert piadinas, which all feature Nutella as the base – we got the Banana Joe which is an open-style piadina with a generous slathering of Nutella that is topped with chopped banana and toasted almonds, for a simple yet delectable sweet treat to end our brunch.

La Piadina is a nice, casual eatery which knows what it does best with an entire menu dedicated to championing their signature Italian flatbread in all shapes and forms. It was buzzing on the weekend we visited, which means the locals agree that the combination of gourmet, fresh ingredients and simple meals made to order is sometimes all you need for a quick and satisfying meal.
