Modern Indian cuisine has found a new home on the upper North Shore at the freshly opened Spice Theory. The restaurant is run by a veteran of Indian food scene in Sydney and it shows in the polished crowdpleasers on offer on the contemporary menu here.
We start off our meal with a tasty Mini Masala Dosa, which is a crispy pancake made from white lentil filled with spiced sauteed potatoes and served with a delicious sambar and coconut chutney.

Next up, we tried the bite-sized Dahi Poori Chaat, which are cute morsels of crunchy puffed breads delicately filled with boiled potato, chickpeas and topped with some chilled yoghurt and different chutneys to get your tastebuds going.

For mains, we shared two of their classics – first up, the Butter Chicken showcases tandoor-roasted chicken thigh fillets which are finished in the pan, coated in a mildly spiced sauce featuring tomatoes, honey, cream and fenugreek leaves for an exotic touch. Our second main was the comforting Rojan Josh, with the tender lamb cooked with a hearty sauce flavoured with tomato, onion and coriander. We mopped up the flavoursome sauces from both the Butter Chicken and the Rojan Josh with their addictive Garlic Naan and Plain Naan too.

Our dinner at Spice Theory was capped off with their delightful Rose Pannacotta, with the rose flavour subtly infused into the creamy dessert so that the fragrance was not too overwhelming for the senses. The other sweet treat we had was the Payasam traditional south Indian rice pudding, which was a lovely way to end the meal (particularly in winter).

Spice Theory brings contemporary renditions of Indian classics in a sleek setting that will be a hit with the upper North Shore crowd – also worth a trip up the Pacific Highway to visit it if you’re on this side of the bridge and craving quality Indian cuisine.
